Would you pay forty euros for used, dirty panties? That is how much my friend Angela makes on online portals specializing in connecting sellers and buyers of smelly underwear. This 29-year-old lady seems oddly enjoying living a sort of double life. It is the complete opposite of what she otherwise embodies in her daily life – the hard-working office assistant and yoga-fan.
Angela, please tell me how it all started?
I was barely making ends meet, juggling university studies and waitressing. Then I heard a professor talking about fetish culture in Japan, especially the sale of “schoolgirl underwear”. In the 1990s, so-called “Burusera shops” became a common thing for men to purchase panties previously worn by teenagers. It was not until 2004 that the state banned the commercial sale and purchase of underwear by minors. Since then, the Burusera shops went underground and are now demanding five times the price on the black market. I found it funny and a bit bizarre. My professor encouraged me to write my master’s thesis about the modern market of used undergarments.
So you began selling your dirty undies as a part of academic research?
That’s right. At first I was just an observer, collecting information on how and where, talking to sellers and buyers, researching this specific ‘field of investigation’. Then I asked myself “Why stay distant? Afterall, it’s a great way to make some money while having a little fun. What’s stopping me from earning an extra living doing such a simple job? Self-respect? Fear? Morality?” And so I set up a virtual shop and gave it a try.
How hard is selling used underwear online?
Not at all! Obviously you need to open an account on several sites and take good quality pictures of the items. It is important to encourage buyers and chat with them, which can be time-consuming. But all in all, it’s a good extra income without financial risks. The bonus is that I hardly ever have to do laundry anymore.
This business is based on wearing the panties, advertising them, talking dirty and going to the post office. If one sells regularly, it becomes a real job. Preparing orders requires engagement and know-how. You clearly have to be very organized and must not get panties mixed up. Personalizing each order, sending handwritten notes, remembering each customer in the smallest detail, answering before they get impatient, checking receipts and payments – it is a lot of work.
Which platforms do you use?
There are a dozen suppliers online, such as Sofia Gray, Sexy Delights, Scented Pantsy, Pantydeal, SellPantiesForMoney, Snifffr, Blushpanties, UsedPantyPortal and LaceInYourFace. Those online portals make the job super easy. I own a shop on several sites. Payments are also made via the websites, so I only have to send the package myself – wrapped in wax paper, sealed in a plastic bag, with either no or fake return address. Because anonymity is very important to me.
Is it safe to sell dirty panties online?
It is if you are careful. Never use your real name, bank details, social media profiles, email- or home-address.
There are some girls on these websites who upload photos with their faces visible. I would never do that. My pics are of the panties only – no body part, no face, no other details. Some customers send messages asking how I look and what turns me on. I actually write back, because, well, if they do not get a sexy photo, then at least dirty talk.
Who buys used panties to sniff them? Who are your customers?
A typical customer does not exist. It’s hard to get an idea of the average age or geographic location of clients without real statistics, but there seem to be men of all ages. I had buyers in their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties and sixties, and from all over Europe, judging by the addresses used for orders.
My clients are guys like everyone else, not necessarily perverts or sexual predators. Some have been fetishists for decades, others were just discovering fetishism or weren’t even really fetishists but simply curious. Sniffing used underwear is still a taboo that disgusts most people. It should not be. People react with incomprehension – not only in front of the customers, but also when discovering that a girl sells her used underwear. Why? I mean, fetishists who legally buy the products do not hurt anyone. It’s the cleanest and most anonymous form of sexual gratification. I don’t get to see what they do with that underwear. And I don’t want to.
Do your friends know about your side hustle?
Not really. I only tell very few people about it; only a few friends are in the know. Once I was dating a guy I really liked. I wanted to be completely honest about what I do, so I told him about my job. He broke up immediately. He thought I was kinda perverted and asked why I didn’t work as a waitress or at the university. Well, I had already done all this before getting into the used panties business!
What relationships do you have with the buyers of dirty underwear?
Both I and other women online don’t sell items like Amazon or ebay do. We sell an erotic fantasy, symbolized by dirty panties. As a result, the relationships maintained with buyers are essential (and therefore time-consuming). First, there is a long “negotiation” phase before a customer places an order. It is a test phase, the client seeks to verify that we really correspond to what he is looking for, and we try to understand his fantasy as best as possible, in order to be able to respond to it perfectly. We send ass-photos, we get to know each other, we quietly get excited… We also have to anticipate whether the guy will end up placing an order, or not. If it’s a deal, the initiated erotic dialogue continues and becomes a little more intimate. The customer hears news of the progress of his order. It is an opportunity to exchange photos (without the face) and develop erotic scenarios. I keep emotional distance but actually once I met a seller who got divorced and started a real life relationship with one of her buyers.
The goal of all my relationship-building is to feed the guy’s imagination and get him excited to receive the package, so that he feels like the happiest of men or a kid opening its dream present on a Christmas morning. This turns one-time buyers into regular customers, returning for more items.
Girls online are super creative, offering not only their worn panties, but also sex-toys, old shoes, used socks, very intimate sweets (like licked lollypops), organic bathroom items (nails, hair, body hair, etc.) or other stuff, such as periodic protection, used cottons, dirty bath towels. The secret is in giving your customer the impression that those personal items are for him only – small treasures not available anywhere else. Not the object but the story and the emotions matter.
Does selling dirty underwear turn you on?
I do it for the money and not because I get any sexual satisfaction from it myself. I mean, I’ve never had an intimate relationship with my underwear or a lover’s boxer shorts. However, even if I don’t share into the kink, I don’t despise my customers. I actually like them in a non-erotic way. Otherwise I probably couldn’t do it at all.
Do you often get specific requests?
Basically, any request is specific! Each saleswoman manages her shop and can choose how she responds to her fans’ wishes. Overall, customers know very well what they want and express their wishes precisely. Everything is detailed, negotiated, defined. How many days do you wear underwear, how (to sleep? After having sex?). Do you wipe yourself with it after peeing? Do you wash when menstruating?
So yes, I have received some specific requests – refused some and accepted others, but let’s skip the details.
Have you had any requests for custom videos, cam, or that sort of thing?
Yes, and I have refused them. My anonymity and safety are super important to me. Most of the time when I say ‘no’ the guys leave.
For many buyers and sellers the purchase of panties is simply the first step in a relationship which, if it satisfies both parties, gradually leads to more important exchanges (webcam, vod, even hand delivery). I only write with my customers – never more.
Can you get rich by selling your panties?
Not by selling panties only. I mean, how many panties can you wear, right? Most girls also sell photos, videos and cam meetings. I suppose that by putting together the profits from their sales, the gifts and the donations, they manage to make a little money, but it is still not a fortune.
The tricky part is to sell without looking desperate for money. The commercial side is not sexy or exciting. You have to pretend that you only do that because you are libertine, perverse, etc. that the money is only used to cover costs.
Dirty panties are a trophy, a perfect physical and fragrant object for fans and fetishists, but only if they create a strong bond between the seller and her buyer. It is the result of a complex and deep relationship.
My niche is sporty and girly panties in bold colors, such as sweet pink and neon yellow. I buy in bulk, with a purchase price of two euros and don’t invest my money into expensive lingerie. A pair of used underwear sells for around 40 euros. In a bit more than two years the revenue was around 10,000 euros.
Angela, what surprised you most in the used panties business?
I was struck by the creativity of the ladies and their ingenious marketing ideas to push sales and make more money. Those that stand out demonstrate a very strong business intuition. I did not expect their profiles to be so heterogeneous. There are of course many young students or thirty-somethings, but also a significant proportion of women who are (sometimes well into) their fifties.
Moreover, this small world of used panties has a surprisingly active community on forums, blogs and on the sites. Female sellers exchange practical advice and talk about their customers. Many ladies have become friends through this community.
